What to consider when buying a flagpole for strong wind conditions

There is a myriad of purposes for both commercial or personal use of flagpoles, both of which require a degree of thought before making a purchase. Fortunately, Harrison’s has a solution for almost any environment or setting as well as the ability to manufacture custom designs.

One of the main factors to consider is the location of the flagpole and the elements it will be exposed to; the biggest consideration being wind. Flagpoles used for commercial purposes or those erected in public areas must be able to withstand strong wind conditions. This is to meet strict safety guidelines. Even garden flagpoles need to offer a degree of durability to protect the homeowner and to prevent any damage to property.

While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to combat blustery weather, considering the following will help you choose the most appropriate flagpole for your needs:

The maximum wind speeds in your location

All of our flagpoles come with a recommended wind speed (listed in mph). More often than not, the given speed will assume that the flagpole has a flag attached. Think about where you intend to put the flagpole. Is it a typically windy location? Will it be exposed to harsh weather conditions in winter? Try searching for a wind chart specific to your area. If you’re not sure simply contact us with your postcode and we can help.

Desired height and intended location of your flagpole

Another important consideration is where are you going to install your flagpole. The height of the surrounding buildings, structures, trees and foliage may be a factor in determining your required height. You may wish to fly a flag below the level of an adjacent building which would provide protection from particularly strong winds. Alternatively, you may want a flag and flagpoles large enough to be seen above surrounding buildings or tree lines.

Understanding a little more about the context and purpose of your flagpole will help you select the perfect product for your requirements. Our range of flagpoles come with full technical specifications that define maximum wind speeds that each flagpole is capable of withstanding. If you can’t find what you’re looking for it doesn’t mean we can’t do it.
