What is the average lifespan of a flag?

Predicting the lifespan of a flag is actually very difficult. It all depends on how it is made, where it is flown, how often it is displayed and in what weather conditions. Due to these different variables, and the fact that the lifespan of a flag varies, we have put together this guide to give you a better understanding of the factors that can determine the lifespan of your flag, and what you can do to try and lengthen this time.

Unfortunately, flags are perishable items. A polyester flag will generally last approximately 90 days based on daily display, but not during periods of inclement weather. And, in some cases, a polyester flag that is displayed 24 hours a day may only last a quarter of that time. Therefore, a lifespan of 22 days is suggested.

What affects the lifespan of a flag?

The weather is the primary variable that determines the life of a flag. Sun, rain, wind, ice and snow all weaken fabrics and threads. The colours will eventually fade and the flag will begin to fray. Even the strongest of flags cannot be flown for long in strong winds without deteriorating! But, to try and lengthen the lifespan of your flag, you should choose a flag that is made up of an all-weather fabric such as polyester. All hems should be turned back twice, secured with two rows of lock stitching on the fly end.

When your flag begins to show obvious signs of wear such as holes, severe fading or frayed edging, it is appropriate to retire the old flag and replace it with a new one. However, you can choose to add anti-fray netting onto the fly end of the flag. This will take the whip of the wind and begins to fray before the flag. When the anti-fray starts to fray, you can simply return it to us and more anti-fray netting can be added the flag, thus extending the life of your flag! Anti-fray is very cost effective when taking into account the initial flag investment.

Here are some other things to consider to lengthen your flag’s life:

  • If you display your flag day and night, is it easy to see it when it’s pitch black? If not, consider taking it down overnight to prolong its life.
  • Make sure your flag is made for outdoor use if you’re planning to display it outside.
  • Remember to bring your flag down in certain weather conditions such as rain, snow or high winds.
  • Clean your flag regularly to avoid elements like dirt and dust from setting into the fabric. This will keep the colours looking vibrant for longer. You can clean the flag with warm water and a mild soap. Be sure to rinse it thoroughly before letting it dry.
  • Avoid placing the flag near anything that could potentially rip it, such as tree branches.

If you follow these recommendations, your flag will look fresher for longer. However, your flag is subject to many different weather conditions; even flags made for all weathers will eventually run their course. We suggest buying flags in pairs as it is very difficult to predict the life expectancy of a flag.
