Installing two 11 metre flagpoles at the National Library of Wales

Harrisons were asked to replace the two original timber flagpoles on the National Library of Wales with a suitable long lasting replacement. Part of the installation and immediate requirement was to form a secure and stable base fixing point for the flagpoles along with the ability to raise and lower the flagpoles at roof level when required for maintenance purposes. The original timber poles had no means of raising and lowering at roof level, originally installed and secured within the roof.

Following a site survey and some preliminary design considerations we custom manufactured  a pair of galvanised steel plinth fixings, assembled and fixed within the roof space to form a robust base to secure the 11 metre tall glassfibre flagpoles above roof level. As with all our custom work Harrisons undertake a series of design calculations to assess the type and construction of flagpole required for the specific location. In addition to this it is imperative that the design of the flagpole is practical for future maintenance and servicing. To achieve this on this project we incorporated a winch function at the base of the flagpole to assist with the raising and lowering of the flagpole when required.

The National Library of Wales is within a  mile from the Welsh coast and in an elevated and very exposed position. The 11m tall flagpoles at roof level have therefore to be designed to withstand the extreme windspeeds that we are now witnessing on a more regular basis. At a minimum all custom flagpoles are designed to operate safely with a flag at windspeeds of up to 60mph and unflagged up to 100 mph or more where required.
