FIFA Women’s World Cup – A Fun Facts About Flags special – Group D

The Women’s Football World Cup is gathering pace and we’re celebrating with a series of posts bringing you fun facts about the flags of the teams in each group.

Today, we’re looking at the flags of the countries in group D: China, Denmark, England and Haiti.

China

The flag of the People’s Republic of China has a red background with a yellow five-pointed star in the top-left corner. An arc of four smaller five-pointed stars is to the right of the larger star.

Did you know:

• It is written in to law that the flag is flown daily at the Gate of New China, Tiananmen Square, the State Council, immigration agencies, ports of entry and more.
• It is illegal to desecrate the Chinese flag – intentionally burning it, writing on it, defiling it or trampling on it in a public place – with imprisonment for up to three years amongst the possible punishments.
• The flag of China was raised for the first time on October 1sts 1949 at Tiananmen Square.

Denmark

The flag of Denmark has a white Nordic cross set on a red background.

The vertical line of the cross is off-set to the left of centre.

Did you know:

• 

  The Danish flag, known as the Dannebrog, is subject to a legend that it fell from the sky in Estonia in 1319.

• The flag of Denmark was the first flag to feature a Nordic cross, which is now on many flags of Scandinavian countries.
• The Danish flag could be the oldest continually used flag in the world. It is said to have been used since the 14th Century.

England

The flag of England, or flag of St George, has a white background with a red cross centred on it.

Did you know:

• The flag is derived from the St George’s cross which dates back to the Middle Ages.
• Despite being the patron saint of England, St George was born in Cappadocia, in modern day Turkey.
• The flag of England is represented as part of the Union flag too.

Haiti

The Haiti flag has two horizontal stripes in blue and red. The country’s coat of arms on a white background is in the centre of the flag.

Did you know:

• The flag of Haiti is one of only seven national flags in the world that features itself in the design.
• The national motto “L’Union fait la force” translates to ‘Unity gives strength’.
• There have been many versions of the Haiti flag over the years, with the current version re-adopted in 2012.
