Custom made wooden base and flagpole installation

All Saints Church Holcombe

November 2024

Project

We were recently approached by All Saints Church in Holcombe, Dorset to replace their old flagpole and wooden base that had been there for many years and had recently failed. The church had historically used a timber cross base to stabilize the flagpole without piercing the leadwork on the roof.

Challenges

Harrisons attended site and undertook a full survey allowing us to take exact measurements to run a series of wind loading calculations to complete the design of a suitable replacement cross base structure and fixing method for the replacement timber flagpole. Careful consideration was given to the type of hardwood used to form the cross base that would rest on the existing lead roof. A sectional design enabled the heavy cross base to be hauled up to the roof and assembled in situ without an assisted lift.

Solution

The critical issue with this installation was to ensure, that as previously, the flagpole could be installed without compromising the integrity of the leadwork and that the loadings on the flagpole would be offset by the spread of the cross base despite being offset.  The church benefactors elected for one of our traditional timber flagpoles with external cleat and plain finial top for this installation complete with lightning protection.
