New 20 metre flagpole installtion at Harrods

Harrods

September 2025

Project

Installing a new flagpole on the roof of Harrods, one of London’s most iconic landmarks, presented a unique set of challenges that demanded careful planning and execution. The location itself was the first hurdle. Harrods sits in the heart of Knightsbridge, a busy and highly congested area where space is limited and traffic management is critical. Bringing in heavy equipment and creating a safe working zone required close coordination with local authorities and a strict overnight schedule to minimise disruption to the public and nearby businesses.

Challenges

Protecting the building was another vital consideration. Harrods is a Grade II listed structure, which meant that every stage of the operation had to be carried out with extreme care to ensure no damage to the historic façade. Adding to the complexity was the height and precision required for the lift. The new flagpole had to be safely hoisted to rooftop level, where strong winds and limited space increased the risks and demanded pinpoint accuracy.

Solution

To overcome these challenges, the project team partnered with Terranova Crane Sales Ltd, whose specialist equipment and expertise were essential. A crane with the right combination of power and reach was deployed, capable of operating effectively within the confined road space while still achieving the necessary height. Ahead of the lift, detailed site surveys and structural checks were carried out to anticipate risks and create a robust plan of action. On the night of the operation, road closures and pedestrian diversions ensured safety, while the team worked under specialist lighting to keep the site fully visible and controlled.

Thanks to the skill of the operators, precise rigging, and clear communication among all teams involved, the lift was executed smoothly and without incident. The flagpole was successfully installed on time and with no disruption to Harrods or the surrounding area. Today, the new flagpole stands proudly on the rooftop, adding to the grandeur of one of London’s most recognisable landmarks. This project demonstrated how careful planning, the right equipment, and strong collaboration can turn a complex urban challenge into a seamless success.
