Whatever your flag is used for, and wherever it is displayed, you’ll want it to last as long as possible. You want to preserve the aesthetic appeal without the worry about repair or replacement. But you also want cost-effectiveness. So the decision on whether to go for hand-sewn or printed is an important one. The longevity of a flag is crucial, but so is the initial cost involved and how this works with your budget. Let’s take a look at some of the important factors in the decision on which type to go for.
Hand-sewn flags are crafted with meticulous attention to detail, often by skilled artisans or flagmakers. Each stitch is carefully placed, ensuring durability and longevity.
Hand-sewn flags are known for their resilience in different weather conditions. The quality stitching and reinforced seams make them less susceptible to fraying, tearing, or fading, even when exposed to harsh elements. Printed flags, however, are more susceptible to wear and tear. This is particularly the case when exposed to outdoor elements such as wind, rain, and UV rays. Over time, the colours may fade, and the fabric may weaken, leading to fraying or tearing along the edges.
While hand-sewn flags may require occasional maintenance, such as re-stitching or patching, they are relatively easy to repair. With proper care and occasional repairs, hand-sewn flags can last for years, maintaining their beauty and integrity. Printed flags tend to require more regular repairs, as they are less durable in general.
Printed flags are often more affordable than hand-sewn flags, making them a popular choice for budget-conscious consumers. The lower cost may come at the expense of longevity and durability. However, if they are for short-term use, or your budget is low, printed flags may be the best option.
Printed flags offer more vibrant colours and intricate designs than with hand-sewn flags, due to advanced printing techniques. However, while visually appealing, the printing process may affect the flag’s longevity. This is particularly the case when exposed to sunlight and weather.
If you’re debating between hand-sewn and printed flags, you have a decision to make. If you’re after something long-lasting, hand-sewn flags are probably the way to go. This is particularly the case if your flags will be displayed in areas of high wind or sun.
On the other hand, if you’re not as concerned about longevity, and have a smaller budget, printed flags can still offer a highly professional look. They will still have super-vibrant colours – they’re just the more budget-friendly option initially!
We are the leading UK manufacturer of high quality, long lasting flags and feather flags. For many of our flags, we are able to offer you the option of printed, handsewn or our eco-friendly Harrison Eco™ option.
Our screen printed flags are printed onto 115gsm quality knitted polyester. Our handsewn flags are meticulously appliqued using 155gsm woven polyester by our talented team of seamstresses, in County Durham. Harrison Eco™ is made from recycled plastic items such as PET bottles and industrial polyester waste. These have been melted down into chips, then spun into yarn that is knitted to form a material.
