Well-known flags have played pivotal roles throughout history. They’re recognised instantly by most due to their iconic nature. Here we explore some of those famous flags and discuss the stories behind them, and their symbolism.

The “Stars and Stripes” of the United States of America

The USA flag has distinctive red and white stripes and white stars on a blue field. It is one of the most recognisable flags globally. Originally the flag was created as a form of identification of American assets for the military. The original design, from 1777, featured 13 horizontal stripes, representing the original colonies that declared independence from Great Britain. This flag also had 13 stars together, representing the union of those states. The flag has been modified a total of 26 times since 1777. Each time a state gained statehood, a star was added to the flag. The current flag, with 50 stars was adopted when Hawaii gained statehood, in 1960. The colours of the flag are said to symbolise courage (red), purity (white) and vigilance and justice (blue).

The Union Flag of the United Kingdom

The flag of the United Kingdom was adopted following the Act of Union in 1801. It includes the cross of St George (England) and the saltires of St Andrew (Scotland) and St Patrick (Ireland). The country of Wales is not represented in the flag. This is because at the time in history of its adoption, Wales was part of the Kingdom of England. The colours of the Union flag are brought from each of the three amalgamated flags.

The “Tricolor” flag of France

The flag of France was first adopted in 1794. It has three vertical coloured, equal bands of blue, white and red, giving it its name, “Tricolor”. An interchangeable version of the flag with lighter shades of the colours was introduced in 1974. The flag represents the values of liberty, equality and fraternity.

The maple leaf flag of Canada

The flag of Canada was adopted in 1965. It has three vertical stripes of red, a double-width white stripe and a further red stripe. An eleven-pointed red maple leaf is silhouetted in the white stripe. The maple leaf has been a symbol of Canada since the 19th Century. The red represents prosperity and hope. The white reflects the peace, tranquility and impartiality of the country.

The rainbow Pride flag

The six-striped rainbow Gay Pride flag is the best-known Pride flag. The stripes are in a rainbow of colours, which symbolise diversity in the LGBTQIA+ community. The flag has become a symbol of hope, inclusivity and acceptance globally. Along with the rainbow flag, there are other designs of Pride flags available, representing a range of communities.
